I'm Kevser Ugurlu, a contemporary visual artist whose practice has been shaped by a lifelong commitment to drawing and painting. My artistic journey began back in Turkey, where I completed my BFA. Having lived across three very distinct cities—Ankara, Sydney, and Tokyo—my work is continuously driven by a central question: “Where is home?” I draw deep inspiration from shared historical narratives, like the story of Exodus and the crossing of the Red Sea, exploring themes of migration, displacement, and human resilience that feel just as universal and urgent today. My practice rests in the space between movement and settlement, memory and place. Grounded in a search for freedom and a desire to challenge rigid systems of control, my work takes a critical look at social, political, and cultural realities. By blending history, mythology, and lived experience with the natural fluidity of paint, I aim to create pieces that invite quiet contemplation and open conversation. Working primarily on paper with watercolour, gouache, and ink, I create semi-abstract compositions defined by fluid forms, layered textures, and intuitive mark-making. I love balancing the figurative with the abstract, using rhythmic details to reflect both emotional chaos and a sense of calm transcendence. For me, every piece is a journey—the research and process of one project naturally open new doors to the next. My work has been featured in juried exhibitions, art prizes, and public projects across Australia and Japan. Alongside my studio practice, I facilitate private and group art workshops, where I focus on process-based learning and making art accessible to everyone.
