Annie Stone

Annie Stone is a self-taught artist based on Thursday Island, surrounded by tropical islands, azure waters, and the vast beauty of the Torres Strait. Her practice is rooted in direct observation and a lifelong fascination with the region’s natural world, translating it onto oil on canvas with a vivid sense of atmosphere and movement. Annie mainly paints using oils, exploring central themes of tropical landscapes, marine life, and flora and fauna. Her work moves fluidly between semi-realism and impressionism, balancing recognizable forms with expressive paint handling and light-filled colour. Across her paintings, Annie’s palette evolves from muted greens of rainforest flora to a bold tropical spectrum, reflecting the shifting moods of island life. Annie’s work has previously been showcased in the Cairns Art Society Annual Awards and the Artists of the North exhibitions, establishing her presence within Far North Queensland’s vibrant arts community. Originally from the glum industrial northwest of England, Annie spent her early life travelling and living in tropical regions of Southeast Asis and north Australia and carries a deep and enduring love of the tropics. A resident of Thursday Island for 26 years, her connection to the Torres Strait informs both the subject matter and the energy of her paintings, bringing the islands she loves to life through oil, colour, and form.
